Nine representatives from Kansas enjoyed Kentucky hospitality at the September professional development conference in Louisville. Those attending included: Terri Widick, University of Kansas Public Management Center; Lieutenant Michael Kolbek, Lieutenant Shane Hoobler, and Major Richard Hladky, Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office; Barbara Smith, Kansas Department of Transportation; Shirley Hollis, Kansas Department of Revenue; Pat Writt, Kansas Department of Administration; Kent Olson, Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services; and Sandy Powell, Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services. Lieutenants Kolbek and Hoobler were recipients of the Askew Award for their Capstone project on community policing. Their supervisor, Major Hladky, is a CPM graduate who attended in support of Lieutenants Kolbek and Hoobler.
“The New Realities: A Decade Later, 1996-2006” Kentucky’s conference theme, afforded opportunities for those of us attending to participate in a wide variety of educational sessions that included: intergenerational issues, society membership building, leadership styles, stress management, and interviewing techniques. The Belle of Louisville was the scene of a delicious buffet meal and cruise down the Ohio River. Kansans had many opportunities to meet with colleagues from other states and to become acquainted with new friends.
The 2006 business year has been a busy period for Kansas Society. As we now move toward the end of the business year, we are preparing for transitional activities. Society President-Elect Mary Parrott, employed by the City of Overland Park, Kansas, will become presiding officer in January, 2007. The University of Kansas Public Management Center will host the 2006 CPM class graduation exercises in early December and KSCPM officers will be part of the graduation ceremony. In addition, a membership social activity is being planned in the next few weeks.
2006 has been a year of fun, challenges, and learning for Kansas Society. Thank you for the opportunity to have served as President during the past year. I wish everyone in both Kansas Society and friends across other states the best for their upcoming activities in 2007.
