Arkansas Society of Certified Public Managers®

We would first like to recognize Society member Doris Anderson for achieving the “Certified in the Governance of Enterprise IT” (CGEITTM) designation. Doris is the Applications and Systems Manager for the Arkansas Department of Labor, is a Certified Public Manager® and served as the 2008 President of the Arkansas Society of Certified Public Managers® (ASCPM). Only five people in Arkansas have earned the CGEITTM certification out of approximately 200 internationally. This certification promotes the advancement of professionals who wish to be recognized for their IT governance-related experience and knowledge. They work in nearly all industry categories including financial and banking, public accounting, government and the public sector, utilities, and manufacturing. We extend our congratulations to Doris for this achievement.
The Arkansas Society has been very busy this year. We held our regularly scheduled quarterly “Lunch and Learn” meetings in March and June. Our guest speaker in March was Kay Durnett, Executive Director of the Arkansas State Employees Association. Ms. Durnett presented information regarding recently passed and proposed legislation that specifically impacts state employees. In June, ASCPM members viewed a DVD titled “Driven to Distraction” and learned about services available from the Arkansas Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Division. The next meeting will be in September. A committee of several ASCPM volunteers has been planning and preparing marketing materials for the society’s “first in a long, long time” leadership seminar featuring Randy C. Frazier. Mr. Frazier, a nationally renowned speaker, will preview his Five (5) Serious C’s of Leadership program that he will be presenting in a day-long seminar on October 6, 2009, sponsored by the Arkansas Society. Mr. Frazier, a native of Arkansas, retired from Arkansas state government as Superintendent of Pinnacle Mountain State Park. In the early 1990’s, Randy began accepting speaking engagements throughout the mid-south, and since 2004 has trained and entertained organizations and businesses from coast to coast. We are very excited to be working with Randy and hope to make this leadership seminar the first of many. See www.morethanleadership.com for more information about Randy Frazier.
In May, AACPM President-Elect Joyce Doakes Smith and ASCPM President Becky Bryant participated in the AGM/CPM graduation ceremonies held in the rotunda of the Arkansas State Capitol. Congratulatory letters and society membership information packets were presented to all AGM and CPM graduates.
To the best of our recollection, the Arkansas Society has not nominated a member for the AACPM Henning Award since 1995. There are many outstanding members worthy of this recognition, so Doris Anderson appointed a committee the last quarter of 2008 to solicit nominations, review submissions, and recommend to the Society a nominee for the 2009 AACPM Henning Award. In May, the Board approved the committee’s recommendation.
Several members of the Arkansas Society also plan to attend the 2009 AACPM Professional Development Conference in Orlando, Florida, in September. In December, the society will host our third annual holiday reception where Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe, agency directors, legislators, APAC Program representatives, and others who support the CPM program are invited to come together for fellowship and refreshments. The Governor’s Mansion, which will be beautifully decorated for the holiday season, will be the site for this year’s reception.
We continue to utilize our new society web site www.arcpm.org to communicate meeting dates and other important information to our members – check us out when you get a chance.
