I have been a member of the Boy Scouts of America for most of my life,
beginning as a youth member in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Exploring and
continuing as an adult volunteer member for these past twenty-five years.
One of my proudest life achievements was earning the coveted Eagle Scout
Award. The Scouting program has had and continues to have a profound impact
on my life, who I am, my belief system and on my management style and
philosophy. Scouting has long promoted the training of youth to be leaders
and in providing community service and help to others. The tag line on
my E-Mail signature block reads, "Train Them. Trust Them. Let Them
Lead.", a quote from the founder of the Scouting program, Lord Baden-Powell.
I find that there are a number of parallels and consistencies between
the Scouting program and the Certified Public Manager program. As Certified
Public Managers, we each have made a commitment to lifelong education
and to continuous improvement of ourselves as leaders and managers. That
commitment is consistent with the first of the three parts of the quote
above ("Train Them."). I have chosen to incorporate the last
two parts ("Trust Them. Let Them Lead.") into my leadership
and management philosophy and style. They have served me very well over
the years and I suggest that you may want to consider incorporating them
into your philosophy and style as well
