Society News

Spring is a busy time of year for the Utah CPM Society. The society works with the Department of Human Resource Management (DHRM) to select a Manager of the Year and to put on a Manager’s Conference. The Manager of the Year selection is in its final phases. The committee that oversees the selection has evaluated applications submitted by departments and candidates are identified for a second round of evaluation, which is an in-person interview with the final selection team. The winner will by announced by the Governor at our Manager’s Conference in May and a formal presentation of the award will occur later in the summer.

Our Manager’s Conference, which is cosponsored by DHRM and the CPM Society, will be held May 4. The theme for this year is “Talknology:  Learning to lead, inspire, and connect through effective communication”. Presentations will be made by Neil Staker and Amanda Dickson, in addition to the announcement of the Manager of the Year by Governor Huntsman. Neil is a principal with PeopleSmart Solutions where he specializes in consulting and training in the areas of Intellectual Capital Management, Organizational Development, Culture, Human Systems, Career Vitality, Performance Improvement, and Interpersonal Skills.

Amanda co-hosts Utah's #1 rated morning show, "Utah's Morning News with Grant and Amanda," on KSL Newsradio 1160. She spoke at our conference two years ago and is being brought back by popular demand.

The manager’s conference lasts only one day and is a lot of work. I can’t imagine how much effort it takes to pull off the AACPM conference. I feel for the folks in Kentucky.
The Utah CPM Society has a meeting each month, excluding the month of the manager’s conference. In February, Palmer DePaulis spoke about mediation as a method for dispute resolution. It was very informative. Among other things, Palmer talked about the amount of control that the participants in the dispute have over the outcome. He noted that they have complete control over the outcome while in mediation and at any point until it goes to court.

In March, Ron Stallworth talked about selling yourself in an interview. Ron is a former board member of our Society and has been in law enforcement for many years. One of Ron’s claims to fame is that he is a card-carrying member of the Ku Klux Klan. The thing that is most unique about that affiliation is that Ron is black.

A local newspaper did an article about Ron’s exploits. (You can see more at http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,635175667,00.html). The power of the Internet allowed the story took off. Ron has since been interviewed by several talk shows and for other printed media outlets. The latest activity has been a trip to California to talk with a talent agency about doing a movie and a book. The focus on Ron’s presentation was his preparation for that meeting and what happened during the meeting.

The last thing to report is that Bill Herman will be coming to Utah in July to participate in the CPM graduation ceremony for this year. Each year someone reads a note that comes from the president of AACPM at the ceremony. We are pleased and honored that Bill will show up this year to deliver the speech in person. Additionally, The CPM society is adjusting the schedule for our meeting that month to have Bill speak to our members.
