Society News

Local government agencies and municipalities are presently feeling the pressure of financial constraints, which has prompted the Florida Keys Chapter of Certified Public Managers® (FKCCPM) to search for new and innovative means to be economically and environmentally accountable. With our attention focused on thrifty, Earth-friendly practices, the FKCCPM co-sponsored a “Government Going Green” Symposium along with the Monroe County Libraries and Extension Services on St. Patrick’s Day. This Symposium was designed to promote fiscal responsibility and provide education and resources while increasing public and government awareness of this issue.

Jim Reynolds, Executive Director Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority

This event was televised on the local MCTV and was well attended by representatives of many different government agencies and utility groups in the Keys. The purpose of the Symposium was to present different sessions focusing on a variety of leadership and management techniques to inspire employees to go green in their homes and at work, while also providing groundwork for a “going green” task force to encourage our government officials to be environmentally conscious in building and planning of new projects, landscaping, water collection, and fuel usage. Speakers included representatives from Keys Energy and Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority as well as the Nature Conservancy and Green Living, who provided a wealth of knowledge to influence our organizations and those around us to live a lifestyle with green living in mind. Also on hand were students and physics teachers from Key West High School to discuss their project of developing and studying bio-fuels for the school bus fleets. It was an excellent and well-accepted topic for a symposium. Door Prizes included LED night-lights, florescent bulbs and a Kayak trip.
