This spring has been a very active season for the North Carolina Society of Certified Public Managers® (NCSCPM). The Membership Committee met on February 8th to discuss various strategies for member recruitment, including one of the most successful strategies, making presentations to the graduating students. Presentations have been given to several groups of students throughout April and May, with each presentation providing an overview of the Society and information on CPM workshops. The Committee is moving towards the second half of 2008 by striving for increased community involvement. This Committee, chaired by Kim Lash Gillespie and including Sarah Smith, Pete Burke, Beverly Hall, Suzanne Beasley, Ed Burt, Debra Underwood and Ethel Keen starting, is seeking volunteer opportunities with local food banks, schools, and healthcare organizations.

Workshop Participants
The NCSCPM held its spring workshop “Perspectives in Leadership” on April 8th. More than 50 people representing all facets of North Carolina State Government gathered for a day of professional development and networking. Dr. Willow Jacobson from the School of Government at UNC Chapel Hill gave a dynamic presentation entitled “Preparing for Tomorrow: Workforce and Succession Planning.” The topic was well received as most attendees indicated they are challenged by the impending wave of retirements throughout the public sector workforce as well as difficulty with employee retention. Ms. Gwen Norville, a trainer with the N.C. Department of Corrections, provided a humorous presentation “Your Generation” which examined the differences between the generations of Veterans, Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennial and Generation Y. Dr. Jim Brunet from North Carolina State University spoke on the topic of “The Public Manager’s Role in Promoting an Ethical Workplace Environment.” His talk was timely as ethics and the challenges presented by them are major topics of the current election cycle. The NCSCPM Program Committee worked very hard to develop a workshop program that would meet the needs of a variety of attendees. Charlene Shabaaz, Linda Jefferson, Jenny Rollins, Anita McNeil, and Kim Gillespie are all deserving of thanks for a job well done! However, there is truly no rest for the weary, and our members are already beginning to plan the fall workshop with the goal of presenting a stronger program that will reach a wider audience. We are currently exploring co-sponsorship opportunities with Ann Cobb, Chair of the National CPM Consortium and Director of the Professional Development Center/PMP program in North Carolina.
