Society News

Those of us in the Wisconsin Society of Certified Public Managers® are looking off over the horizon to the southeast, wishing our friends in Ohio the very best as they prepare for our next national meeting. We look forward to seeing all of you down there! Meanwhile, the burr oaks around the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison are rapidly leafing out. Spring has finally returned, and like the statue on top of our dome, we are continuing to move forward!

As part of our ongoing commitment to continuing education, our Past-President, Jeff Roemer, led a special training event in February. “Verbal Judo & Leadership Tactics,” originally developed by Dr. George Thompson, is a communications course that was designed to empower law enforcement officials with conversational skills to reduce threatening behavior in potentially violent situations. If you are interested in this course, e-mail Jeff at: jroemer@rwmanagementgroup.com.

In May, our Society is sponsoring two one-day training sessions related to “Skills for New Supervisors.” Our President-Elect, Lutfi Shahrani, and our Treasurer, Kathy Skiera, have worked very hard to put this training together. Lutfi has had such a good response from his marketing of this course that he is planning to create a sequence of materials designed to fill a niche between the training the State provides and the more advanced training within our Wisconsin Certified Public Manager® Program. If you would like more information about this course, Lutfi can be contacted at: shahrlu@dwd.state.wi.us, or talk with him in September at the AACPM Conference in Ohio!

As always, we encourage you to see other things we are up to by visiting our Society Web site, www.wscpm.org which continues to be a key communication tool for all of us. In a continued effort to incorporate and use new tools in our Society, our newest technical addition is our blog, which can be reached through a link on our website. Although this remains in its early stages, it will be more elegant as we work more on the design this summer. You’ll be hearing more from us!!!
