The Ohio CPM Society concluded 2003 with its third annual development
conference. The feature speaker, Dr. Charles Dygert, instructed
the participants on the "Culture of Success" and provided
strategies to enable the participants make a positive impact in
their workplaces by identifying key barriers that inhibit successful
cultures. During the conferences award luncheon, the Society
formally recognized Ohios first Askew Award honorees: Chris
Yanai, Conrad Ames, John Curtis, Gary Croft and Jim Haviland, a
Project 2 Team which created and enacted through legislation, an
Emergency Admission process which enables the Ohio Department of

treatment unit to a hospital-level psychiatric unit to receive treatment.
The Society was also pleased to award its first Ohio CPM of the
Year Award to Anthony Zampedro, Assistant Law Director of Parma,
who serves as president of the Cleveland Chapter of the Ohio CPM
Society. Among his contributions to the Society, Mr. Zampedro was
honored for his efforts to lead the creation of the Societys
scholarship program designed to provide financial assistance to
those students enrolled in the OCPM program who have both a demonstrated
financial need and a commitment to public management. The Society
also honored Victoria Gatien with the presentation of the Societys
Service Award. Ms. Gatien served as the former Ohio CPM program
manager and was recognized for her unwavering commitment to the
program and for her pioneering efforts which enabled the establishment
and accreditation of Ohios CPM program. The Society concluded
its third annual conference with an annual member meeting in which
the 2003 Society board and then Society president, Myron Downard,
were recognized for their leadership and support in advancing the
mission of the Society on behalf of all Ohio CPMs.
In 2004, the new Ohio CPM Society board is committed to serving
its current and prospective members, and will continue to build
upon the successes of its predecessors. The Society has undertaken
a strategic planning exercise to coordinate and direct its resources
during 2004 and beyond. Much has been accomplished during the Societys
three years of existence and the board believes that continued coordination
is required to enable the Society to successfully flourish and serve
the growing number of Ohio CPMs. The Society board is working to
increase communication with its current and prospective members
through the creation of a new website and a monthly electronic news
service. The Society is currently developing its new website which
will launch in March. The site and its features are designed to
be intuitive to our members. The Society board is also pleased to
announce the creation of the monthly Ohio CPM Society eNews, an
electronic publication aimed to keep its current and prospective
members apprised of current issues and upcoming activities occurring
within the Society, the OCPM program and with our University Partners,
as well as with our national affiliate, the American Academy of
Certified Public Managers® (AACPM). The first edition, January
2004, provided an overview of the Society board and committees.
Following monthly editions will communicate current, ongoing or
new initiatives of interest to Ohios CPMs.
The Ohio CPM Society looks forward to a successful 2004 in Ohio
as well as continuing its successful relationship with its society
counterparts throughout the country.
