President's
Message Continued
As I look back, the following is a partial listing of our achievements
from 2003:
-
Copyright protection of the "Certified Public Manager®"
title (a joint effort between the Academy and the Consortium)
-
Preparation and release of the outstanding "The History
of the Certified Public Manager®", researched and compiled
by Thomas H. Patterson, CPM
-
The quality and success (programmatic and financial) of the
15th Annual AACPM Professional Development Conference hosted
by the South Carolina Society in Charleston, South Carolina
-
The opportunity to meet and hear from CPM Founder Ken Henning
and first CPM recipient George Askew during the Annual Conference
-
Publication of the NH Team National Survey Project "The
Value of the Certified Public Managers® Education
and Designation"
-
Naming the Academy Newsletter the "CPM Connection"
through a competition thereby fulfilling an early goal of the
Academy
-
Amending the Academy Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to
increase the return 50% of any Conference profit to the Host
Society while maintaining the Academys 75% share in case
of a loss
-
Reduced individual ASPA Membership rates (as a benefit of
AACPM membership)
-
And perhaps most importantly, a renewed sense of friendship
and cooperation at the
Annual Conference and beyond
As I look ahead, the following are some of the strategic goals
and activities for this year and beyond:
-
Supporting and attending the 2004 Conference in Topeka by
all Academy Members
-
Implementing the newly designed, updated and named "CPM
Connection" Academy Newsletter beginning with this issue
-
Pending release of the updated/expanded and user friendly
Academy Web Page
-
Exploring possible relationship between Academy, National
CPM Consortium and NAGTAD (National Association of Government
Training and Development)
-
Continuing efforts to provide similar copyright protection
of the "American Academy of Certified Public Managers®"
and our logo
-
Building upon the past successes to achieve our commitment
to communication, cooperation and partnerships as outlined in
my last Newsletter article
While we continue to face the challenges of our current times,
we are also situated to provide leadership and direction to our
respective governmental agencies to provide the best possible services
to the citizens. Our CPM training and experience better enables
us to set the example and lead the way in this endeavor. We are
also in the position and have a responsibility to provide support,
leadership and direction to our local Societies. We gain personally
from the experience while providing the Societies with the support
they need to be successful.
As a reminder, you still have the opportunity to nominate individuals
or apply for:
-
The prestigious Henning Award for Professional Excellence;
-
The George C. Askew Awards;
-
Three Academy Boards seats up for election this year; and
-
The Fran L. Wilkinson Scholarships for 2004.
The deadlines for nomination and application submissions are rapidly
approaching. Please take the time to nominate deserving persons
for consideration.
I want to recognize and thank all those individuals who have agreed
to chair or serve on the various Committees of the Academy. These
Committees are the backbone of the organization and their dedication
and efforts result in the successes we achieve.
One last item before I close, I want to extend a very special
thank you and recognition to our Immediate Past President, Larry
Totten. Larry was a truly outstanding President this last year and
provided great leadership and direction to the Academy. He has been
and will continue to serve as a role model and mentor for me, but
more importantly he is a friend.
I am asking each Academy Member, if you have not already done
so, to make the decision and commitment to attend and participate
in the 16th Annual AACPM Professional Development Conference to
be held at the Capitol Plaza Hotel, Topeka, Kansas from June 19
to 23, 2004. Pat Writt and Kent Olson, Conference Co-Chairs and
their Conference Planning Committee have been working extremely
hard to plan a top quality Conference for us. Please make every
effort join us in Topeka for an outstanding Conference and CPM event.
Conference information and on-line registration is available on
our Web Page (www.cpmacademy.org).
I look forward to seeing all of you in Topeka in June!
