Society News

A new year means new beginnings for the Utah CPM society. Each year we have several replacement board members and this year we decided to hold a training session for them to help them understand how the board operates and their role in making it an effective group. This is the first time we have held this type of training and it was very successful and helpful.

Each year the society works with the Utah Department of Human Resource Management to select a manager of the year and to hold a manager's conference. The board members responsible for these committees immediately got to work to kick off these activities.

The manager of the year must be selected by the end of April so the honoree can be introduced at the manager's conference. This year the manager's conference will be held on May 4th. The theme for this year is "Talknology: Learning to lead, inspire, and connect through effective communication". Last year Governor Huntsman introduced the manager of the year at our conference. We have high hopes that he will return again this year.

The society also holds monthly lunch meetings to learn about some topic and to network with other members of the society. The first meeting was held in January and was used as an opportunity to get acquainted with members. In February we are having a presentation about "Alternative Dispute Resolution methods" from Palmer DePaulis who is the former mayor of Salt Lake City and a current member of the Tax Commission for the State of Utah.

Finally, we have a major effort underway to update organizational documentation that guides the monthly activities of the society and identifies the responsibility of each board member. These documents haven't been reviewed in several years and are out of date.

As president of the society, I really appreciate the hard work of the board as collectively we strive to lead the organization.
