During the Awards ceremony, James R. Brown was honored as the recipient of the Gene W. Childress Leadership Award. The Gene Childress Award is given in honor of Gene Childress who served as the first Executive Director of the Governmental Services Center (now known as the Office of Employee and Organizational Development) beginning in 1981 and instituted a training program that later became affiliated with the Certified Public Manager® Consortium. A Society committee selects the winner through an evaluation of applications.

“J.R. has served as a role model for many in his agency and in the KSCPM. He was the first graduate from his agency and served as KSCPM president in 1999. Membership increased significantly during his term. He served as a Delegate to the AACPM Conferences and is directly responsible for several persons enrolling in the CPM program and/or becoming officers or board members in KSCPM. He is a leader who exhibits an exceptional level of service and long-term dedication to government. J. R. is an outstanding leader in may areas, from his dedication to government and his clients, he has advanced the training of top officials in law enforcement agencies so that they can better serve the general public.”

“Larry exhibits the highest level of dedication and service to his agency and its customer, working continuously to improve operations and delivery of services. This professionalism is also manifested in the high level of active service to CPM organizations at the national level and by extension the society level since his certification was earned in December 1993. He currently holds the distinction of having the longest continuation of service on the AACPM Board of Directors. Larry has promoted the CPM certification to employees within his agency and several have successfully followed his lead. He continues to be an advocate for the program within his agency and recently was the Host Conference Chair of the 18th Annual AACPM Professional Development Conference.”

This annual event concluded with Expressions of Appreciation to recognize outgoing officers and committee members of the September AACPM conference, followed by the drawing for several door prizes.
