By Judy A. Dennis, CPM, Secretary

The AACPM Board of Directors met on February 25 through March 1, 2007, in Yuma and Phoenix, Arizona. The Board not only conducted its annual business meetings, but was able to receive two-days of “Lateral Thinking” training to assist with the AACPM’s Strategic Planning efforts.
The Board approved a number of committee chair, co-chair and membership appointments as recommended by Academy President Ron Buchholz (WI).
Here are some of the highlights from the meeting:

Finance Committee
Academy Financial Reserves
Since action taken by the 2001 House of Delegates meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona, the Academy has been holding funds in reserve to hedge against potential operating losses by the Academy or against potential financial losses by the Annual Professional Development Conference, for which the Academy has an obligation to cover. At the present time, a total of $ 30,500.00 is being held in reserve. However, the initial House of Delegates vote to secure these funds was specifically only to cover anticipated losses in 2001. Although these reserves have been annually reported to the House of Delegates since 2001, there is no standing direction for these financial reserves to remain in place. In order to maintain strong financial standing, the Finance Committee is recommending the Board of Directors act to formally designate these reserves in appropriate interest-bearing instruments to be: AACPM Operating Reserves: $10,500.00 and AACPM Professional Development Conference Reserves: $20,000.00; and to further direct the AACPM Treasurer to account for these funds accordingly. The interest earned on these reserves would become a revenue source for the AACPM operating budget on an annual basis and the principle amounts only remain in reserve.
The Board adopted the recommendation concerning the Academy’s financial reserves.
MEMBER SERVICES
Conference Committee
Conferences are planned through 2011. They are as follows: Wisconsin (September, 2007); Columbus, Ohio (September, 2008); TBA, Florida (TBA, 2009); Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (September, 2010) and TBA, Utah (TBA, 2011).
Member Affairs Committee
Prior to the Board meeting in Arizona, the Board approved a proposal to provide electronic subscriptions to The Public Manager magazine for 2007 with an optional print subscription offered for $29.00 per individual subscription. The electronic subscription rate represents a discount of approximately 90% off the retail rate. The AACPM will be given publication space for (1) free ½ page advertisement each year, and a 30% discount on other advertisements it might wish to place.
We anticipate adding two new links to our website for additional member benefits, a travel benefit link and a link for purchasing computers. These will allow members to travel and buy computers at discounted rates, however, there is no endorsement from AACPM for either company.
Orientation Committee
Reva Tisdale (ID) and Curtis Richardson (WA) have agreed to Co-Chair the Orientation Committee, with assistance from Hazel Shaw (AZ). The Orientation meeting is for first-time AACPM Professional Development Conference attendees.
In closing, I would like to say it is an honor and a privilege to serve the AACPM membership as its Secretary. Please let me know if you have any questions, or if I can assist you or your Society. My Email address is jdennis@odot.org.
