The North Carolina Society of Certified Public Managers® (NCSCPM) was well represented at the American Academy of Certified Public Managers® (AACPM) annual conference in Louisville, Kentucky. Officers, Board Members, and members at large attended. North Carolina was honored by having Dr. Edward Burt receive the 2006 Henning Award.
The NCSCPM Fall Workshop and Annual Meeting was held on November 8, 2006 at the Department of Corrections (DOC) training facility located in Apex, NC. The workshop was held in the morning, followed by lunch, with the business meeting in the afternoon. The theme for the workshop was “Business Continuity and Pandemic Influenza.” Mr. Brant Goode presented information on the State’s pandemic influenza and business continuity plan. Mr. Goode recently completed a two-year assignment in North Carolina as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Small group discussion followed Mr. Goode’s presentation to help attendees brainstorm toward planning their department’s reaction and response to the myriad of issues, which can potentially arise if the threat becomes a reality. As an added bonus, the DOC hosted a flu-shot clinic the same day of the meeting. This year’s meeting was quite the honor for those that attended. History was made in that the NCSCPM had in attendance the five NC Henning Award winners, Margaret J. Bailey Peacock (1994-1995), Ed Phillips (1997), Patricia “Tish” Hagler (1998), Haywood Poole (2000), and Ed Burt, III (2006). It was an awesome experience for all attendees to have the opportunity to network and discuss issues with these five great leaders. Margaret J. Bailey Peacock, who was instrumental in getting the NCSCPM chartered and was also active at the national level, where she served as president, presented the 2006 Margaret J. Bailey Award to Tami Hinton during the annual meeting. The program committee is to be commended, and we look forward to what they have in store for the 2007 spring workshop. The 2006 program committee was chaired by Pete Burke, and included Kim Gillespie, Katherine Harrelson, Tami Hinton, Cheryl McLean, Anita McNeil, Pani Tademeti, and Victoria Walker.
The NCSCPM installed the 2007 slate of Officers and Board Members at its annual meeting. The 2007 Officers and Board Members are as follows:
- President: Pete Burke
- President-Elect: David Osborne
- Secretary: Amy Sawyer
- Treasurer: Tina Pickett
- Board Chair: Dan Thomas
- Board Members: Karen Corley, Kim Lash Gillespie, Robin Haden, Katherine Harrelson, Anita McNeil
The NCSCPM membership committee distributed NCSCPM key chains to the new PMP graduates at the graduation ceremony which was held on October 2, 2006. The key chains displayed the NCSCPM logo. This year’s Askew Award winner is Robert Vause; he is employed with the Department of Transportation. Mr. Vause was recognized at this graduation ceremony. The membership committee and board officers were available at the graduation to provide information on the NCSCPM to the new graduates with hopes that many will join the NCSCPM.
