Three CPM Leaders Recognized for Outstanding Contributions

Three Certified Public Managers® of diverse backgrounds and from different geographic locations were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the American Academy of Certified Public Managers® (AACPM) during the 16th annual Professional Development Conference and House of Delegates Meeting in Topeka, Kansas.

Greg Hyland of Arizona was presented with the second President's Award in the Academy's history, while long-term AACPM Board Members, officers and leaders Ed Burt of North Carolina and Larry Totten of Kentucky were presented with Special Service Recognition Awards.

At the opening of the annual House of Delegates meeting, AACPM President Ronald Buchholz noted the Academy has had, as a long-standing goal, the desire to record the words, vision and guidance of its founder, Ken Henning.

"This was achieved when Ken Henning and the first CPM Program graduate, George Askew, attended and participated in last year's Conference in Charleston. Ken Henning made two presentations during the Conference, one at the Presidents Luncheon and one at the Awards Banquet, plus both Ken and George participated in a number of other Conference activities. It was an opportunity of a lifetime for those of us who were privileged to hear Ken speak and spend some time with him."

"We were able to videotape Ken Henning's presentation at the Awards Banquet and now have his vision, words and guidance recorded on tape and DVD, Buchholz reports.

"Achieving this long time Academy goal and capturing Ken Henning's presentation was only possible through the dedication and effort of Greg Hyland. Not only did Greg make arrangements for the needed equipment; he also recorded the presentation, edited it and formatted it into a highly professional end product.

"In recognition of all that Greg did to make this happen, I am presenting him with the President's Award for 2004," Buchholz said. Arizona CPM member and former AACPM Board Member Jeff Kramer accepted the award on Greg's behalf, who was unable to attend the Topeka meeting.

During the annual Academy Awards Banquet, Buchholz noted that "the Academy has been blessed since its inception with outstanding Leadership. Those individuals who sought out and gained positions on the Board through election have served the Academy to the very best of their abilities. The Academy and each of us have benefited from their guidance, wisdom and understanding.

"We are in a very unique position this year in that the Board of Directors includes two individuals who have perhaps done more to advance the Academy than any of you might realize. Between the two of them, they have served 14 years on the Board in a variety of positions.

"Ed Burt has served as Treasurer from 1992-1994 and from 2001-2004 and is the second longest serving Board Member in Academy history. Ed has taken the Academy from the "early days" in finances to where we are today—computerized and meeting the latest accounting standards.

"Larry Totten has served as Treasurer from 1998-2000, At-Large Board Member for Member Affairs in 2001, President-Elect in 2002, President in 2003 and Past President in 2004. He also served as a Kentucky Delegate in the 1996 and 1997 HOD. Larry has served in every Board position, except one, and is the longest serving Board Member in the Academy's history."

In recognition of their outstanding service and dedication to the Academy, the AACPM Board designated Special Service Recognition Awards to highlight the outstanding service and accomplishments of these individuals.
