The Arizona Society’s Past President Greg Hyland announced at a recent state board meeting that he is a candidate for AACPM President-Elect at this year’s annual conference in Louisville, KY. The ASCPM is proud to support Greg in his bid for AACPM President-Elect.

In other Society business, Arizona State University (ASU) held its annual spring CPM graduation ceremony on May 19, 2006, which proudly marks its 20th anniversary of CPM graduations. Forty-eight (48) graduates received their CPM credential at the ASU Downtown campus in Phoenix, AZ.

Earlier that morning, Bill Herman, AACPM President, arrived in hot Phoenix, Arizona, leaving a cool and rainy Manchester, New Hampshire, behind. Prior to the graduation ceremony he met with current ASCPM Board members Larry Gordon, Hazel Best-Shaw, and past President Al Ramsey and his wife Diane. The group met at a local downtown Mexican restaurant where they discussed the issues of the day.

Arriving at the ASU Downtown campus, Bill had the opportunity to meet Sally Manatt, CPM Program Coordinator, Cathy Eden, CPM Program Director, Ina Wintrich, Assistant Director of the Advanced Public Executive Program (APEP), and Robert Denhardt, Director of the School of Public Affairs at ASU. As the graduation ceremonies got under way, Wilma Himel, ASCPM President, introduced Bill, one of the keynote speakers. Bill’s address to the graduating class included the rich history of Arizona’s CPM origins (one of the original seven states) and the important role it plays to this day. He urged the graduates to join the ASCPM and participate in the organization to utilize their education, knowledge and experience for the betterment of their communities.

After the ceremony a reception was held in honor of the graduating class and their families. Bill had an opportunity to mingle with many of the guests and graduates. Bill even recruited a new member for the Arizona Society, Mr. Manuel Cisneros, Director, Governors Office of Equal Opportunity. Mr. Cisneros expressed to Bill his full support of the program.

Bill’s trip concluded with dinner and a final debriefing held at Sam’s Café, another Mexican restaurant with Board Member Larry Gordon. The whirl wind visit to Arizona was inspirational and greatly appreciated. ASCPM thanks Bill for his support, motivation and encouragement imparted not only on the 2006 graduating class, but also to the ASCPM Board and its members.
