As one who started my working life in the news media field, I am still amazed at how the news of the day can affect the very core of our daily lives. Even from far flung locations around the globe from places that some of us have never heard of and many of us can’t pronounce, the cable news networks and other media venues bring the best and the worst of the world into our living rooms and lives 24/7. In recent days, I have returned from what I believe to be a productive trip to Utah. Beyond being able to participate in the Utah CPM Graduation and meeting with the Utah Society of Certified Public Managers®, I had the great fortune of being able to travel out to some of the most beautiful mountains and countryside that is America, while also being able to take in the beauty and serenity that Salt Lake City has to offer. An unexpected highlight of this trip was the chance to briefly visit with Craig Odekirk, AACPM President in 1997. Craig has recently completed a near two-year activation with the U.S. Army in support of America’s efforts overseas. A modest individual, Craig is truly a great example of not only the best of what the Certified Public Manager® is supposed to be, but of the citizen-solider that was envisioned by our Founding Fathers more than 230 years ago. Hopefully by this point in the year you are enjoying a pleasant summer and have had safe returns from long-planned vacations. For those who are still due a vacation or are able to secure employer support for professional development training, I encourage you to quickly sign up for the 18th AACPM Annual Professional Development Conference. As I write this article, we are less than two months away from the 18th Annual Professional Development Conference to be held at The Galt House in Louisville, Kentucky from September 10 – 12, 2006. Robinil Jameson and Larry Totten, Conference Co-Chairs, and their Kentucky Conference Planning Committee have been working extremely hard to plan a top quality Conference for us. For many of us, the annual AACPM Conference is a great way to complete the needed educational units we are required to earn each year as managers, while also being able to visit a portion of our country that we may not typically get to visit…More > |
