AACPM Strategic Planning Committee Looks Forward
By Mark Evans, CPM

At the Presidents’ Meeting at the 20th Annual AACPM National Professional Development Conference in Columbus last September, AACPM President Greg Hyland appointed a new strategic planning committee. Mark Evans of Wisconsin and Charlene Cutting of New Hampshire will co-chair the committee with oversight by AACPM President-Elect Joyce Doakes Smith.
In early November, a letter was sent via email to each Society President inviting each society to appoint someone to this committee. As of early January 2009, we had 14 committee members from 13 states participating in this effort. We have created a shared work space using the free Internet collaboration tool on Wiggio.com, where we have also shared documents and commentary and initiated three conference calls.
One of our committee's early spring objectives is to conduct an online survey of AACPM stakeholder groups to get feedback on our strategic planning effort. [Please watch for information on this survey, coming soon to an e-mail inbox near you!] We will produce a draft report and seek additional feedback from the AACPM membership at the national meeting in Florida in September. We anticipate having an upgraded draft plan for presentation to the AACPM Board by the end of 2009.
Past strategic plan work:
Our committee wishes to recognize the history of AACPM strategic planning, which included work in the 1990s, 2000, 2001, and 2002. In 2001, during Tom Patterson’s term as AACPM President, three initiatives were identified and addressed by Academy committees:
- AACPM Leadership Academy
- AACPM Orientation Program for New Societies, and
- AACPM Integrated Marketing and Resource Catalogue
Additionally, five goals which parallel five goals cited by Kay Nidiffer Rogers were articulated in 2000, 2001 and 2002. These are:
- To provide effective governance conducive to a national organization
- To improve and enhance communications between the Academy, the local societies, the membership, the Consortium, and others
- To encourage membership and to recognize outstanding individuals and accomplishments by members
- To provide tangible member services
- To develop a system of metrics to assess progress and problems
Part of our new committee plan includes reviewing past documents and the AACPM SOP 6.00 for relevance and currency as we move through our work in 2009.
