The Wisconsin Society of Certified Public Managers® (WSCPM) has a lot going on! Our first meeting of the new year will be Thursday, March 5, in Madison at the Madison United Way building on the East side. Reviewing our society bylaws and suggested changes to our draft Standard Operating Procedures will be on the agenda. You can review these documents on our website, www.wscpm.org, under the Other WSCPM Documents link on the left of the Home Page. We will also continue discussions from last fall regarding how we can use on-line collaboration tools to model new technologies and improve our effectiveness as public managers in a changing work place.
Dianne Hughes, has been appointed by Mark Evans to replace Ron Buchholz as our WSCPM Representative on the Wisconsin Certified Public Managers® Program Policy Board. The board guides the instructional planning and course development of Wisconsin’s CPM Program. Dianne will do a super job!
Based on an idea initiated by our Vice President, Lutfi Shahrani, a group of our Society members met for breakfast on a cold and snowy Wisconsin morning in early December as a way to connect socially and help support each other in our personal and professional lives. We will have another breakfast meeting in a couple of weeks and hope to get others throughout the state interested in doing this.

December WI CPM program graduates
The WI CPM Program held a graduation in December, adding 13 new CPMs to the ranks of Wisconsin’s most skilled public managers. Another graduation ceremony is scheduled for February in Janesville. We are delighted that more public managers are advancing their personal and professional growth!
Amy Banicki, our new WSCPM Historian At-Large Board Member, joined our board in January. Amy was in the Army, serving two years in Germany. She returned to college in Wisconsin and earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. In 1996, she became an adjudicator with the State of Wisconsin, Department of Workforce Development where she was promoted to promoted to supervisor in 2001. She became the adjudication manager for the Madison Adjudication Center in 2005, earned her CPM in 2006, and was promoted to Statewide Adjudication Manager in 2008. Way to go, Amy!

Cathy Williquette, Wisconsin’s Brown County Register of Deeds, At-Large Board Member for Communications, and 1998-1999 WSCPM President, received the 2008 Badger Award from the Wisconsin Newspaper Association (WNA) http://www.wnanews.com/index.asp, the world’s oldest press association. The Badger Award recognizes an individual, group or organization that has demonstrated outstanding efforts to protect and enhance openness in the conduct of the people's business. It is the highest honor given to a non-member by the WNA. The WNA presented the award to Cathy at its annual convention in Green Bay on January 30 in recognition of her long-standing dedication as a public official to an informed citizenry. Upon creation of the Badger Award in 2003, the WNA Board of Directors noted: "The free flow of information between government and the people is commonly referred to as the 'people's right to know'. It is essential to the principle of democracy." We are all very, very proud of Cathy!
