by Mark Evans, CPM & Charlene Farmer, CPM
Committee Co-Chairs
In April, the AACPM Strategic Planning Committee released five on-line surveys designed to generate broad participation and ideas to guide the future of AACPM. Targeted stakeholder groups and response numbers as of May 1, 2009 are:
| |
CPM State Society & AACPM Members |
383 |
| |
CPM State Officers & AACPM Board Members |
41 |
| |
CPM Program Graduates Who are NOT AACPM Members |
236 |
| |
CPM Students |
195 |
| |
CPM Consortium Members |
17 |
| |
TOTAL RESPONDENTS – MAY 1 |
872 |
These surveys will close by May 9, 2009.
Debbie Smith, AACPM Board Member at Large for Member Affairs, e-mailed two surveys targeting either society members or society and AACPM officers to state society officers and board members of the AACPM. State society officers could then forward the first survey to their membership. The other three surveys targeting current or former CPM students who are not society officers or Consortium members were sent via e-mail to Terri Callahan, president of the National Certified Public Managers® Consortium, and Jack Lemons, Consortium administrator, to members of the Consortium for e-mail distribution to Consortium membership.
We had two conference calls in February and March arranged through our free, online collaboration tool www.wiggio.com. We realized that reaching our stakeholders would be very uneven in different states because of the differences in recordkeeping for current and former CPM students. Some newer CPM programs are more likely to have e-mail records of past students, whereas older programs may not.
We also acknowledged that some respondents fit into two or more stakeholder groups (i.e., some people may be a society member, society officer and AACPM board member and/or Consortium member) and knew if they did, they might or might not take all relevant surveys. We decided this should not be an unreasonable problem and anticipated that any survey taken, would be taken from the perspective of the targeted stakeholder group and results should validly reflect ideas and priorities of each stakeholder group. We also decided to capture the respondent’s state for each survey, knowing state perspectives may vary and feedback to and from each state’s CPM society might be very valuable.
These surveys were collaboratively developed, edited and then pre-tested twice on-line by our committee membership to ensure question value, clarity of style, and grammatical correctness. Our quest was to achieve maximum simplicity and value. We appreciate everyone’s efforts to get this survey out. Our full committee is listed below:
Mark Evans (WI) - Co-Chair WI
Charlene Cutting (NH) - Co-Chair, NH

Clearly, special thanks go to Debbie Smith, Terri Callahan, and Jack Lemons for their phone calls and help with distribution. An extra special thanks goes to Chris Cunningham, coordinator, Cybercrime Training Lab at Fairleigh Dickinson University, who created our on-line surveys using www.surveymonkey.com.
Our committee’s next step will be the analysis of survey results targeting a first draft strategic plan report this summer. A preliminary plan will be shared at the AACPM Professional Development Conference in September in Florida. We will seek your additional feedback down by the palm trees. Stay tuned for updates.
