North Carolina Society of Certified Public Managers® would like to acknowledge the hard work of the Wisconsin Society and congratulate them for a successful program with the 19th AACPM Professional Development Program! The NC delegation included Past Presidents Ed Burt (2006 Henning winner), Beverly Hall and Sarah Smith, as well as current board members Pete Burke, Anita McNeil and Amy Sawyer, NC Alum Steve Mastro and members Kathy Pope, Carly Perin and Jenny Rollins. Also attending and calling the Tar Heel State home were 2007-08 CPM Consortium Chair Ann Cobb and Consortium Administrator Jack Lemons.
From start to finish, we were truly made to feel welcomed. The weather in Madison was perfect (even Monday’s rain!), the keynote and breakout sessions well worth the time and the overall hospitality of the People of Wisconsin is something you should all be proud of. Oh — and your state capitol building is a stunning edifice!
The NC Board met on Friday, September 14 fresh off the Wisconsin experience, recharged and ready to take on the challenges facing our Society. After recapping the Conference for those unable to attend, we got right down to business. The most pressing issues for North Carolina include drafting the slate of candidates for Board and Officer positions, the upcoming annual membership drive and our Fall Workshop. Program Committee Chair David Osborne is working with NC State University to secure a special registration fee for Society members to the annual General Henry Hugh Shelton Leadership Forum on November 16. Our Society has also linked with the NC State College of Management to promote the COM’s Wachovia Executive Lecture Series. The Series presents interactive sessions with national business leaders three times per semester. The fall slate features the CEOs of Caterpillar (global engagement), R.H. Donnelley (managing change) and BB&T Corporation (leadership and values).
The North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh was once again the site of the graduation ceremony for the Class of 2007, Certified Public Manager® Program. On Monday afternoon, October 1, the class of 55 graduates representing 14 agencies and universities was welcomed to the event by Ann Cobb, Managing Partner with the NC Office of State Personnel (and 2007-08 Consortium chair) and listened intently to a wonderful keynote address from Dr. Elizabeth O’Sullivan, Chair of the Department of Administration at NC State University. After receiving their certificates, most of which were presented by their agency secretaries, NC Society President Pete Burke spoke briefly, extending the Society’s congratulations and inviting them to become members of our organization. Finally, Mr. Michael King with the Department of Commerce was awarded the Class of 2007 Askew Award for his project “M.I.S. Customer Relations Improvement.” The NC Society congratulates Michael and looks forward to his being duly recognized by the American Academy of Certified Public Managers® in Columbus, Ohio in September 2008.
