By Doris Anderson, CPM

Doris Anderson, Becky Bryant, Michael Waters, Barbara Mahoney, and Arkansas Askew Award recipient Romany Brooks, represented Arkansas at the 20th Annual AACPM Conference in Columbus, Ohio. The breakout seminars were very informative and the keynote speakers were both motivating and entertaining. The annual conference also provides great opportunities to network with other Certified Public Managers® from around the country.

Back at home, our Society President-Elect Rob DeGostin accepted a new job, and feeling he could not fulfill his duties, resigned his Board position. However, we are proud to announce that Becky Bryant was elected to complete his term and will serve as the 2009 President of the Arkansas Society.
For our September general membership meeting, back to school decorations and supplies were brought by Emma Lay, who serves on our Board as Member at Large. Emma took time out from her scheduled vacation to participate in the meeting. All monetary donations and school supplies collected at the meeting were presented to the Arkansas Department of Human Services--Division of Children and Family Services for distribution to needy children. We collected $75.00 cash and seven (7) FULL WalMart bags of crayons, pencils, paper, glue, glue sticks, pencil boxes, rulers, markers, scissors, and ink pens. We want to express a BIG thank you to our members, as these supplies will certainly be put to good use.
Our last quarterly meeting for the year will be on December 4, 2008, and will include a drop-in holiday reception from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Governor Mike Beebe, Arkansas legislators, state agency directors, university representatives and others who support the CPM Program will be invited to attend. A guided tour of the Governor's Mansion will be available at 1:30 p.m. Additional information is available on our Meetings page at our web site: http://www.arcpm.org/meetings.html.
The Governor's Mansion opened on January 10, 1950; and is decorated each year for the holiday season. The Mansion sits on eight-and-one-half beautifully landscaped acres in Little Rock; and features one of the largest herb gardens maintained by the National Herb Society, as well as a vegetable garden, which is an ongoing project of the Arkansas Master Gardeners. The Mansion has online tours available at http://www.arkansasgovernorsmansion.com/tours.html.
