The four-member 2008 Wilkinson Scholarship Committee, chaired by Barbara Taft of Oklahoma, completed its work resulting in two scholarships being awarded at the September Awards Banquet in Columbus, Ohio.

The Committee received a record number of seven (7) applications this year and was very excited about this increase. The 2008 Committee has made some recommendations for enhanced marketing of the scholarship opportunity, and is hopeful to see another increase in applications in 2009.

Congratulations to the 2008 recipients, Julianna Carvi of Ohio and Rebecca Conley of Kentucky.

Juli Carvi returned to school a few years ago and attained her undergraduate degree in Business Management. She is now working on her Masters. She writes, "I, like many managers, was promoted in my area due to technical skill. I had not received any formal managerial training until I started the CPM program. When one of my first CPM instructors spoke of management as a career, as a collection of skills, and that a good manager could be effective in any situation, even if it was not in her area of expertise, I was hooked. It was an epiphany for me. I'm due to be finished with school in the spring of 2009. My goal upon graduating is to try to marry my love of public service and my love of industry and the market that drives our economy. To that end I'm looking at Ohio's agencies that bring the two together, such as the Department of Development and different chambers of commerce. I hope next year in Florida I can report to you all about my new career. I know I'll make a difference wherever I end up, and I'll get to spread the word to a new group of people the value of the CPM Program."

Rebecca Conley is currently the Division of Securities Branch Manager for the Department of Financial Institutions in Frankfort. She is getting a post-baccalaureate degree in paralegal studies at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky, and is now taking classes in Legal Research and Writing and Criminal Law. Rebecca plans to be finished with her degree in June 2009, and is considering going to law school when she retires from state government in 2012.
