During 2009 the Mentoring Committee under the leadership of Greg Hyland assisted two new CPM organizations in setting up their societies and seeking charter from AACPM. The Michigan Society of Certified Public Managers® was formed primarily by members of their first graduating class and is now in the final stages of becoming a fully chartered member of the Academy. Washington D.C is now represented by a reformed society called the National Capital Region Society of Certified Public Managers® and includes members from all three CPM programs in the D.C. area who have been certified by the CPM Consortium. This newly formed D.C. society has submitted all the required documents to the Academy and is being recommended for charter by the mentoring committee.
Currently there are 30 accredited CPM programs in 27 states and Washington D.C. Twenty of these programs are represented by active chartered societies. Nevada, Nebraska, and Alaska have expressed interest and are currently being mentored. Alabama was inactivated in 2009 but new graduates in Alabama have expressed interest in reforming a Society. Texas is redesigning their society to encourage more participation by members in state and national level activities.
Although the some societies have been inactivated in the past few years, the Academy is still growing in both societies and members. AACPM’s goal is to encourage the formation of societies in every state with an accredited CPM program. To meet that goal we will continue pursuing opportunities to work with CPM graduates in Iowa, Illinois, and California, as well as encourage re-chartering of Virginia and Alabama.
The Consortium currently has ten additional “Associate” member programs. Four of these programs have CPM students in training and six are developing CPM programs for their state or region. The Academy will continue to grow as the Consortium works toward its goal of having CPM programs in all 50 states by the end of the new decade. Our future as an organization is bright.
